George Herbert(1593–1633)
George Herbert (1593–1633) was a Welsh-born English poet, orator, and Anglican priest. He is considered one of the most important poets of the 17th century, best known for his spiritual and devotional poetry. His works express his deep religious faith, his personal struggles, and his wish to serve God by word and deed.
Feature Of Herbert Work:
01. Religious devotion: Nearly all of his poetry is about God, faith and the Christian life.
02. Metaphysical poetry: Like other metaphysical poets (such as John Donne), Herbert employed elaborate metaphors and intellectual diction to tackle spiritual themes.
03. I: His poems often read like personal prayers or meditations.
04. Use of form: He was original with poetic form, often shaping words into shapes (concrete poetry), as in “Easter Wings.”

The Temple (1633)
It is his best-known collection, published after his death.
It comprises more than 160 poems on the relationship between the soul and God.
The collection is divided into three sections: The Church Porch, The Church, and The Church Militant.
A long dramatic monologue expressing anguish about religious duty, frustration, and rebellion against a conventional life, concluding with ultimately peaceful surrender to God’s will.
“Love (III)”
One of his most famous, and most heartbreaking poems. It is a conversation between the soul and Divine Love (God), emphasizing God’s grace and acceptance.
“Easter Wings”
Wings, spiritually extending, with a fall heightened by the structure of the shaped poem.
