🧩 Essentials
“War and Peace” is a novel encompassing the periods of French invasion of Russia, which spanned 1805 to 1812. It revolves around the Russian French noble families, focusing on the Rostovs, Bolkonskys, and the Bezukohs.
The book mixes battle scenes, personal drama, romance, and philosophical prose about life, history, fate and considerations on existence.
🧑🤝🧑 Characters
Pierre Bezukhov: A socially awkward, heavy-set man, he searches for meaning in life and has trouble navigating his relationships after receiving a massive fortune.
Andrei Bolkonsky: A son of an old aristocrat. He is intelligent, of noble birth, and accompanied his father to war. He is haunted by personal tragedies, as well as a yearning for purpose.
Natasha Rostov: She is young, warmhearted, impassioned. Most of her adventures throughout the book relate to her romantic endeavors.
Count Rostov & Family: The families symbolize the slow decay of the old Russian aristocracy.
🧠 Themes
War and Peace – the disarray of violence during battles in contrast to quietness of struggling which is taking place in a person’s life.
Free will vs destiny is the question whether the man carves out his or shapes his history or is dragged in currents that do make it.
Love, family, identity and the emotions experienced during struggle of change amidst politically driven time.
✍️ Favorite moment:
Andrei’s character is very sympathetic, as are the characters who surround him. What I noticed while reading this book is that Tolstoy explores astrophysics, diving in depth from many angles whether it be psychologically or historically. His criticism towards historians is ruthless – rather than portraying war in a heroic, event driven light, it should be from the standpoint of the many irreversible chances and decisions that lead to an outcome.

About “Sonnet 18”: Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, traditionally beginning with the line “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”, is one of his most admired and well-known sonnets.
